Shillong to Cherrapunji: 7-Day Meghalaya Itinerary for First-Time Visitors
Day 1: Arrive in Shillong.
- Guwahati (Assam) is where you want to begin your tour. Meghalaya’s capital is your destination, which is Shillong. Road journey to Shillong in the morning/afternoon. The time it takes will be 3–4 hours. From the Assamese plains, you’ll move into the

Day 3: Drive to Cherrapunji or Sohra and Waterfalls
Presently, you are heading towards Cherrapunji, which is renowned for its rainfall. The journey is very picturesque.
- Morning drive to Cherrapunji: The time it takes to leave Shillong is approximately 2 hours. A stop will be made at Mawkdok Dympep Valley Viewpoint.
- In the afternoon: Nohkalikai Falls. Explore India’s tallest plunge waterfall. Water plunges 340 metres into a gorgeous blue pool. The legend behind this fall tells a tragic local story.
- Late afternoon: Seven Sisters Waterfalls, Mawsmai Cave.
- 7 Sisters Falls: Witness these seven falls cascading down a cliffside when in season.
- One of the simplest caves is Mawsmai. Explore the natural limestone cave. A well-lit region with tight and wet passages.
Day 4: Go to Living Root Bridges.
- The most well-known reason to visit Meghalaya is. A natural wonder crafted by the Khasis is in store.
- Whole day: Trek to Double-Decker Living Root Bridge. Drive to Tyrna village, where this trek begins. The hike to Jingkieng Nongriat, or Double-Decker Living Root Bridge, is quite challenging. The trekking involves 3,000 steps up and down.
- Expert Tip: Rubber fig trees have roots over rivers and streams to make them into bridges. The whole process takes years. Nature and Khasi have a fantastic rapport. Walk another hour to Rainbow Falls via the Double-Decker bridge if you can. The water is clear, with a rainbow making it all worthwhile.
- Evening: Unwind in your hotel in Cherrapun.
Day 5: Cleanest Village and Crystal River in Asia
- After leaving the gloomy hills, you reach a tidy border village today.
- Mawlynnong Village this morning. Drive to Mawlynnong, “Asia’s Cleanest Village”. Observe how the community emphasises cleanliness and simplicity. Village model.
- Midday: Riwai Single Living Root Bridge. A short walk from Mawlynnong lies a solitary living root bridge in Riwai village. This walkway is easier than the Double-Decker.
- Dawki and Umngot River. Drive to Dawki, on the India-Bangladesh border. The draw is the Umngot River. When not monsooning, the river is clear from October to May. You must take a boat to see this natural gem.
- Return to Shillong for the night. It will be a lengthy but scenic trip.
Day 6: Explore Laitlum Canyon and Sacred Forests.
- This post will examine Shillong’s less-visited yet equally beautiful attractions.
- Morning: Laitlum Canyons. Morning excursion to Laitlum, “The End of Hills”. This site has stunning valley and hill views. The sunrise here is stunning when it shines. Natural amphitheatre.
- Late Morning: Mawphlang Sacred Forest. Visit Mawphlang Sacred Forest by automobile. Khasi people revere this woodland. Never pick a leaf from this woodland to avoid ill luck. Visit this woodland with a native guide.
- Shop locally in the afternoon. Return to Shillong. Daylong souvenir shopping at Police Bazaar or local markets. Bamboo, Khasi shawls, and organic spices are available.
- Try Khasi food like Jadoh (meat and rice) or Doh Khlieh.
- “Meghalaya will have to be left after a final stop.”
- Morning: Optional Final Visit. A brief aviation history tour is offered by both the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians, a breathtaking Shillong Cathedral, and the Air Force Museum.
- Daytime: Back to Guwahati. Leave your staying place and go to Guwahati Airport/Railway Station to head back home. Drive for 4 hours, plus extra time for check-in at the airport. Therefore, you will not miss your plane.

- Accommodation: Book in advance, especially during peak season. A homestay in a village such as Cherrapunji and Mawlynnong allows transportation.
- Transportation: Private taxis or shared Sumos from one town to another are suitable for far-off places. Winding but picturesque roads.
- Rainy weather and clothes: Meghalaya. A lightweight rain jacket or umbrella is a must in Meghalaya, regardless of blue skies above. Strong and comfortable footwear is a priority, especially when hiking to Root Bridge.
- Cash: In Shillong and Cherrapunji, the amount of cash offered by the cash machines in these regions is sufficient for small villages and market business.
- Respect Local Culture: Khashis are very hospitable. One always has to respect their culture, especially in their sacred forests and villages. Prior permission is necessary before taking someone’s picture.
